Welcome to JNR Games
This website is my hobby. It represents my first attempt to publish my own games for others to play and enjoy. Head over to the games page to see what's there. I also intend to share some of my thoughts about game development, and web development, over on the blog page.
So, who exactly is writing this stuff?
Good question. My name is Chris Jenner. I am a programmer, from Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. I have been a professional game developer since 1999, which is quite a long time. You may ask why, if I develop games all day and get paid for it, I also develop games as a hobby. I will try to answer this question in one of my blog posts.
You mentioned games, can I play them for free?
Yes, the content on this site is all free. I have been experimenting with Adobe's Actionscript 3 language for programming, and have had some success. The advantage of actionscript is that it will play in almost all browsers, on pcs, macs, or unix machines, through the flash player browser plugin. Most machines already have this downloaded, so it should be easy to get the games working.
Note, that even though I've been referring to 'Games' in the plural, at the moment there is only one, and it's not really finished yet. If this grammatical sleight-of-hand bothers you, try to read this whole section as if it was written in the future-conditional tense. Insert lots of [If I manage to get lots of time to work on this stuff, then...] and similar things into the sentences, as appropriate.
You also mentioned a blog, is it worth reading?
When I was thinking about creating a web site to publish some of the work I was doing at home, I thought that it would be fairly empty if I limited the content to just being games. Games take a long time to produce, particularly if you are limited to working in the evenings and weekends, and you also have a family life to fit around the development. So, it occurred to me that something that was missing from the web was the random thoughts and musings of someone that I don't know and don't care about. I might not be able to provide that for everyone (some people do know me), but I can provide it for the vast majority of the world.
My intention is to write about game development, Actionscript, and web development. I am not particularly experienced in Actionscript or web development, but I am learning stuff all the time as I try to get my game finished, and get this web site up and running. I aim to record the things that I learn, and share them with anyone who might be interested in the more technical aspects of what I've been doing here.
So, I guess that for most people, the answer to that question is no.
Is all the content on this site going to follow this annoying question and answer format?
No.
